Following the spread of violence against the people of North-East in the country, The Union Home Ministry has announced the ban on sending bulk SMS/MMS for the next 15 days. The decision was taken in an attempt to curb the spread of rumors in the country. Over the last couple of days, We have seen immense rise in rumors by miscreants and this has led, a mass departure of northeastern people from certain states.

The Union Home Ministry states that, The decision was taken after reports of widespread circulation of SMS and MMS containing misleading information about Assam violence, threats to people of northeastern origin living in other parts of the country.

According to the imposed restriction, From August 18, 2012, mobile users can send only 5 sms/mms per day to the maximum after which the messages don’t get delivered with a prompt indication from the mobile operator. The restriction will be active for the next 15 days. If you happen to cross your daily limit, you will be greeted with the following message:

“Due to Govt. directives, More than 5 SMS per day are blocked. Please retry tomorrow. Anticipate your co-operation.”

According to Union Home Secretary R K Singh, the Government is even monitoring social websites to identify those who are spreading rumors. So if you happen to be sharing related news about violence in North-east India, we would advice you to remove it immediately.

5 SMS per day ban india

Supposedly the government is going to restore the SMS service back from 2nd September on-wards. To me the restriction seems complete Nonsense and only weak government like ours Impose such Ban. What do you feel? will this ban for 15 days will help in curbing the spread of rumors?

[ Note ] transactional message related institutions such as Banking, Financial institutes & Railways have been left out from this ban.
